Hornby Road becomes dumping ground

Nick James

Burnt-out cars, green waste and plastic bags. Those are a few of the many items said to have been dumped on Roberts Rd.

Kevin Hornbrook said he had been a Hornby resident for 62 years.

He said everyday he drove along Roberts Rd and saw rubbish dumped there. The road had been a dumping area for 20 years, he said.

Hornbrook said he had seen everything from household furniture to burnt-out cars .

He called for something to be done as it was a "massive pain".

Christchurch City Councillor Jimmy Chen, who represents the Hornby ward, said he had been made aware of the Roberts Rd dumping problem though the Greater Hornby Residents Association. Roading contractor Higgins used to clear up the rubbish in the past, Chen said.

He said it was an ongoing issue and called for security cameras to be installed on Roberts Rd.

Chen encouraged Hornby Community Watch to patrol the area more often.
