Dominic Newman has been selected to play hockey for New Zealand.

The Canterbury midfielder trains eight times a week, Monday through to Saturday, with a mixture of turf training and gym training.

Dominic attended Christ's College and said the school was really helpful in his development.

"The school was really helpful and I was surrounded by really good coaches and managers."

Dominic said getting selected to play for the Commonwealth Games has been one of his long-term personal goals.

The Commonwealth Games are being held on Gold Coast, Australia from April 4.
