Spark has announced it's testing New Zealand's 5G for the first time in Wellington today.

The 5G upgrade will run 100 times faster than the current 4G network, being able to download a full-length movie in just seconds.

Spark says the new technology will be nine times faster than fibre.

Spark's Managing Director Simon Moutter says concepts like self-driving cars, smart cities, virtual and augmented reality require a fast wireless network.

The target to release the new upgrade is at the end of the year.
